Gaining Perspective: The Hidden Key to Unlocking Your Leadership Potential

In the journey of leadership, we often hear about the importance of skills, experience, and networking. But there's a less-discussed factor that can be just as crucial: perspective. Recently, I had an enlightening experience that brought this idea into sharp focus.

The Power of Perspective: Insights from Top Executives

Last week, I found myself in a unique position. Seated around a table with a group of powerful executives during a group coaching program I run about women at work, I listened intently as we delved into a pivotal question: When had the switch flipped for them? At what point did they find their confidence, and what changed?

Their responses were both surprising and enlightening. While most admitted to occasionally still experiencing imposter syndrome (a reminder that self-doubt can persist even at the highest levels), they all pointed to a significant change in their professional lives as the catalyst for their increased confidence. For some, it was a new job. For others, it is a promotion or a new boss. But the common thread was clear: it was hindsight that created clarity around their skills and abilities.

This revelation highlights a crucial point: sometimes, it's perspective that frees us. A change in our environment or responsibilities can provide the distance needed to see our capabilities more clearly. It's as if stepping back from a painting allows us to see the full picture rather than focusing on individual brushstrokes.

The Perspective Paradox

But herein lies a paradox. If a change in circumstances is what provides this valuable perspective, what about those who are struggling in their current roles without any immediate prospects for change? How can they gain the perspective needed to recognize their own potential and build confidence?

This is a challenge many leaders face, particularly those in the middle of their careers. You may have outgrown your current role but haven't yet found the next opportunity. Or perhaps you're in a position that should be fulfilling but find yourself plagued by self-doubt. In these situations, waiting for external change isn't always feasible or desirable.

Strategies for Gaining Perspective in Your Current Role

So, how can you gain perspective without a major career shift? Here are some strategies that can help:

  1. Seek "Perspective Partners": Identify trusted colleagues, mentors, or coaches who can offer an external view of your achievements and potential. Regular check-ins with these partners can help you see your growth and capabilities more clearly. They can point out strengths you might be overlooking and help you recognize patterns of success in your work.
  2. Document Your Achievements: Keep a running list of your accomplishments, big and small. Review this list regularly. Often, we forget our own progress amidst day-to-day challenges. This practice can help you build a more accurate picture of your capabilities over time.
  3. Engage in Cross-Functional Projects: Volunteer for projects that take you out of your usual role. Working with different teams or on new types of tasks can highlight skills you may not use in your day-to-day work, providing a fresh perspective on your abilities.
  4. Seek Feedback Proactively: Don't wait for annual reviews. Regularly ask for specific feedback from colleagues, subordinates, and superiors. Be sure to ask not just about areas for improvement but also about your strengths and positive impacts.
  5. Become a Mentor: Guiding others can provide a powerful shift in perspective. As you articulate your knowledge and experience to help someone else, you'll often realize just how much you've learned and grown.
  6. Reflect on Past Challenges: Take time to think back on difficult situations you've navigated successfully. Often, the wisdom gained from these experiences only becomes clear with time and reflection.
  7. Imagine Your Future Self: Engage in an exercise where you imagine yourself five years from now, looking back on your current role. What would your future self recognize as key learning experiences or achievements that you might be overlooking now?

The Ripple Effect of Perspective

Gaining a new perspective on your abilities isn't just about feeling more confident (although that's certainly valuable). It can have far-reaching effects on your career and leadership style:

  • Increased Risk-Taking: When you have a clearer view of your capabilities, you're more likely to take on challenges that stretch you further.
  • Improved Decision-Making: Confidence in your skills can lead to more decisive and effective leadership.
  • Enhanced Team Leadership: Recognizing your own growth journey can make you a more empathetic and supportive leader for your team members.
  • Greater Resilience: A solid understanding of your abilities can help you bounce back more quickly from setbacks.

The Ongoing Journey

It's important to remember that gaining perspective is not a one-time event. Just as those executives I spoke with continue to experience moments of self-doubt, we all need to regularly reassess and recalibrate our view of ourselves.

The key is to make perspective-seeking a habit. Build it into your routine through regular reflection, seeking feedback, and engaging with your "perspective partners" (or thought partner). Over time, you'll develop a more nuanced and accurate view of your capabilities, allowing you to lead with greater confidence and effectiveness.

Remember, sometimes the only thing holding you back is your own limited view of yourself. By actively seeking new perspectives, you can unlock potential you might never have realized you had. In doing so, you're not just advancing your own career – you're setting an example for others and contributing to a work culture where everyone is encouraged to recognize and reach their full potential.

So, take a step back. Look at your career, your skills, and your potential from a new angle.

You might be surprised by the leader you see looking back at you.
